Italy’s market for single-serve coffee is projected to grow by 11.2% in 2025, reaching a total value of €1.58 billion, according to a recent industry report. While much of this value increase is attributed to rising average prices, real-term consumption is expected to grow by 2.6%. The analysis highlights a significant shift in consumer behavior and competitive dynamics within one of Europe's most mature coffee markets.

The primary driver of growth is the at-home consumption segment, which is forecast to expand by 4.2% in volume. This is led by sales in modern trade channels (+9.0%) and B2C e-commerce (+2.1%). In contrast, physical specialist stores and single-brand shops are experiencing a decline. Within the business sector, the Ho.Re.Ca. channel shows robust growth of 6.5%, while office coffee service (OCS) and B2B resellers are facing contractions. The report notes that paper pods are the fastest-growing format, with a projected 28.6% surge in 2025, followed by special capsules at 10.1%.

The competitive landscape is evolving beyond system popularity to focus on several key areas. These include premiumization, with a growing emphasis on single-origin, 100% Arabica, and specialty offerings to differentiate products. Sustainability is also a crucial factor, as roasters develop compostable and recyclable options to meet EU regulations and consumer demand. The Nespresso Original compatible capsule segment, in particular, has become a key battleground for roasters aiming to introduce premium aluminum and compostable options, effectively turning it into an open standard for high-end single-serve coffee.
