Researchers in China have identified a new potential industrial application for spent coffee grounds (SCG), converting them into a biochar catalyst to treat toxic gas. A recent study published in the journal Biochar details a process where SCG are transformed into a porous, nitrogen-rich material that can effectively remove hydrogen sulfide from industrial waste streams by converting it into elemental sulfur.
Hydrogen sulfide is a hazardous and corrosive gas produced by industries such as petroleum refining and wastewater treatment. The research highlights the potential for a more sustainable treatment method compared to conventional approaches, which can create their own waste streams. The study notes that more than six million tons of spent coffee grounds are generated globally each year, with a large portion sent to landfills where they contribute to methane emissions.
In laboratory tests designed to simulate industrial conditions, the SCG-derived catalyst demonstrated high durability and performance. According to the paper, it achieved over 99% conversion of hydrogen sulfide with nearly 100% selectivity for elemental sulfur, a stable substance with its own agricultural and industrial uses. This work adds to a growing body of research focused on creating value from coffee byproducts and advancing circular economy principles within the industry.
