The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) has established a new, high-level qualification aimed at seasoned coffee professionals, titled the Master of Specialty Coffee. The association describes the new credential as the “apex of professional coffee education,” designed for individuals who have accumulated extensive, cross-disciplinary experience throughout their careers in the coffee industry.

To be considered for the program, applicants must meet a stringent set of prerequisites that demonstrate comprehensive expertise. Eligibility is contingent upon holding all four existing SCA diplomas: Barista Skills, Brewing, Green Coffee, and Roasting. In addition, candidates must possess a current Q Grader license, provide evidence of significant industry experience, and submit professional recommendations.

The assessment process is multi-staged and rigorous. After an initial application review, eligible candidates must first pass a 100-point knowledge examination and a subsequent interview. Those who advance are invited to a five-day intensive program, which culminates in four final exams. These include three assessments based on complex case studies and one communication-focused exam, reflecting the program's emphasis on both analytical and practical leadership skills.
