A study recently published in the journal Ecology documents how certain ant species not only evict borers from infested coffee cherries but also use the hollowed-out berries as nests for their own reproduction.
The discovery was made by researcher Jonathan Morris, who first observed the behavior in 2016 and returned to the field for further documentation. The study focuses on species like the electric ant (Wasmannia auropunctata), which are already known biological control agents that prey on adult borers. This new finding suggests that the ants gain a reproductive advantage by occupying the borer's former habitat. This benefit could help sustain more diverse and robust ant communities directly on coffee plants, strengthening their role in integrated pest management.
The coffee berry borer is responsible for significant economic damage worldwide, with some estimates placing annual losses as high as $1 billion.
